Our primary program in Ethiopia is run by our Ethiopian partner, New Bright Community Development (New Bright). Working closely with the government and local schools in, New Bright offers a variety of classes and trainings to vulnerable children and youth in the poor Sheromeda neightborhood of Addis Ababa, including:
· Tutoring classes for students preparing for the national exams
· English classes
· Computer classes
· Art classes which culminate in a major art exhibition each year
· Life skills training
· Distributions of sanitary pads to girls
As a result of the classes and trainings run by New Bright, academic performance at school has improved dramatically with many more youth passing the difficult national exams, enabling them to pursue higher education. In addition, the Youth Centers run by New Bright have provided a safe space where students use an extensive library, borrow books and build their self-confidence.
Since 2009, HFCF has funded scholarships for students attending college and university, as well as vocational training programs.
HFCF also supports St. Yared’s School in Addis Ababa which admits the brightest, most determined, high-potential young students from the most impoverished backgrounds. Using the best international teaching practices and curriculum, students receive a first class education.
